A musicians guide to sealing The Publishing Deal

Through my years of recording and running a music publishing I have worked with many musicians/A&R's and producers both major and independents in this section of Rapcology life on the beats I will go over a few tips on creating and shopping winning demos the get the deals. A lot of this info was gathered through hands on experience working with other musicians and song writers. The best home studio musicians spend many years mastering theirs instruments and learning there studio gear and perfecting their composition chops but that's not enough to guarantee success in the music business your recorded demo is what promotes your expertise. The recorded demo can be used effectively in pursuit of many goals in the music business including but not limited to: A music publishing contract, a record label deal or music for film, video games, and television depending which objectives your pursuing you will have to take a different approach but the goal and focus is the same cutting a great demo creating a hit song and cutting as many corners to save money without killing our chances of success. The main focus here is on what you need to do to produce a demo that will get you noticed and propel your music career forward like the Starship Enterprise

. The Recorded Demo

The Sole purpose of a song recording is to sell the publishing of the song itself exclusive or leases However that doesn't mean that the musicians performances isn't critical to the songs success to many times I have heard songs that sound good music wise while the vocals sound as though the musician was not good for the track and there vocals took away from the song face it not everyone can sing or rap or even produce and have know business behind the mixing boards and booth. Always seek out the best singers and rappers to perform your demo's so that the song is represented in the best possible light. Do not sing or rap your own demo Home Studio producers unless you make the demo sound really good and professional your vocals must be on point and add texture to the song.

The art of music distribution in review

The digital age has arrived learn how sell your music independently through social media platforms this video offers every new age option of pushing your music over the net.

[Food for thought for when recording your demo's fellow musicians

Nine times out of ten the music publisher you pitch your demo to will focus in on your bad vocals and miss the song if you cant deliver good vocals on your mix home producers remember to find the best musicians you can so your demo's sound really good and increase your chances of scoring a record deal.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

.The Sound and Quality Of Your Music

Song writers, home studio musicians and producers I cant stress this topic enough it takes money to make money I know most of us our working on a tight budget but in this business of music you must invest in your music career that means keeping your studio gear updated and artist's produce your song demo's in a quality studio, even if the studio's rates and your budget constrain you to keeping the production simple keep in mind though a unprofessional recording will not favorably distinguish itself from the huge volume of other submitted song demo's the music publishers hear remember this is a business my fellow producers if you cant produce quality in your home studio either higher a engineer or go to a quality studio to produce for your artist's and get the quality sound you looking for and need getting a publishing deal means being able to present sellable material. There's a certain level of quality your songs have to attain to sell your music.

. Working with the A and R reps

The primary objective of a recording artist, musician or home studio producer's demo is to obtain a record or publishing deal for the performing musician or musicians on the song demo. In many cases the recording artist will also be the songwriter whose songs are featured on the song demo. Now for those of you who don't know who A and R reps are and what value they hold to the artist these people are the ears for the major record labels they screen artist's demo's for the next hottest music trend think of the A and R reps as talent scouts all they do is listen to demo's all day. Home studio producers when producing an artist demo keep in mind it's generally more important to make the completed product sound like a finished recording than with a song demo. Presenting a A and R rep with a demo containing fully finished arrangements will place your submission ahead of the competition as long as you have a library of finished songs the more you have the better it increases your chance to get a record deal.

[Food for Thought when working with AandR reps]

Independent songwriters and home studio producers who have the time and budget to produce a entire album to a interested A and R rep is sure to seal the deal. Producers I cant say it anymore but keep your demo's fresh and real don't mimic your favorite artist keep your sound original the reps want to here originality they want to hear you.

5 tips on how to approach music blogs with your music

Being a rapper music producer as well as an editor of a couple of blogs I have the best of both worlds when it comes to music submissions.

Many sites have their own guidelines for submissions and these should always be addressed but on the chance that they don't, here are a few tips you may want to consider in hopes of getting your music on your favorite online publications.

1.Keep it simple & plan

Keep the subject simple Capital letters are a no-no. Even if the reader would accept it, their email's spam filter may not. Keep in mind what you say and how you say it. Something as simple as "Music Submission: Your name - Album/EP name" will still get their attention and most likely stay clear from the clutches of the dreaded spam filter.

2. Don't describe yourself by the compliments of others

This may be obvious, but it's worth repeating. In the words of Reverend X, "your thoughts ain't my thoughts". Whatever someone said about your music doesn't necessarily ring true with another listener. It's best to refrain from comparisons to major artists or your favorites for the sake of sounding generic and like every other rapper.

3. Attach a photo and relevant links to your work

Unless they specifically tell you not to, give them as much information about yourself as you can without writing something you'd expect to read for your obituary. Sending a photo means they don't have to source one, which saves time and that means more time listening to your music. Giving them links to your work and where you are on the internet is also handy should they want to keep in touch or make a note of your future releases. Giving them Facebook and Twitter links also means they can link you in tweets that go out if they publish you, increasing your exposure.

4.If they haven't written something for you, don't harass them

This goes against what people tell you in relation to applying for jobs, but the difference is bloggers don't actively advertise for artists to apply for space. As many bloggers will attest to, we have an everlasting backlog of features and a lot get deleted before a second of audio is heard. There could be a chance yours is amongst the deleted but if not, be patient.

5.Make sure your music is stream-ready.

Having spoken with bloggers, a common gripe is the lack of previewing music before deciding to download. Having releases purely on Hulkshare or Mediafire just won't cut it, especially if you haven't released anything before. Setting up a Soundcloud, Audiomack or Bandcamp account takes very little time and comes with plenty of opportunities to gain a fan base or add to your current one.
--> =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Film and T.V Sync and the indie recording musician

Film is a medium where form wins over content so your song demo's have to be impressive as they can. Once your considered for a project talk with the director and find out what of music they are looking for. Then submit your best music that you think would be appropriate for the project. If you get the ok to score a contract expect the director to ask you to make changes to the music through out the life of the project. Film and T.V scoring is mainly good for the home studio producer because you pretty much need to have your own studio set-up to accommodate changes and the process never ends until the underlying project is finished product.

.Food for thought for film and t.v.

home studio producers Whether your producing a demo for a publishing or recording contract to perform at a nightclub or score a song for film and television, video games you must make a commitment to stay in the business of making music for the long run if you want to succeed in the game of music and understand this the first few demo's you make may not succeed but don't let that discourage your dreams, keep at it ....practice makes perfect but persistence builds a career.

.The Webcasting Musician broadcasting your music through internet radio

As if you didn't know home studio producers the internet has paved the way for the indie recording songwriters. The web has made it possible for musicians to broadcast their own music by setting up a webcast that plays your music. Most artist secure agreements from there friends in indie bands and rap groups that will let you play there music with know restrictions. Webcasting's main objective is providing airtime to independent recording artist's that do not get mainstream exposure. These are a few tips about broadcasting your songs on the internet.

Understanding Bitrate

Bitrate is the single most important setting in any encoder software because it determines the playback quality, the size of the outputting file and the transmission requirements of sound and video Bitrate also gives you an indication of the amount of compression that has been applied to a file and a general sense of the resulting sound or picture quality for example 128 (kbps) is the standard for encoding stereo music files like a wav file which most home studio producers use into the MP3 format. At the bitrate of 128(kbps) a MP3 file format sounds good and the quality is much that of a Fm radio.

Understanding URL.(www.yourband.com) and what it means to the recording musician

I suggest all home studio musicians get familiar with URL Uniform Resource Locator. If your not already The web address to your music for all the home studio producers who have underground record labels most may use the internet to promote music you know when you promote your url it should open a world of studio creativity and impress highly of what you do musically. here's an example of one of my url addresses from a hip hop blog I manage.

Raptimez Chicago's #1 hip-hop blog geared toward the taste making of the urban underground rap community.

Turnkey Webcasting The Home Studio Producer

Turnkey Webcasting is one of the simplest ways to webcast online one of the turnkey internet radio servers. Broadcasters pay a small initial set-up fee as well as a nominal monthly charge to maintain your episodes then you can upload your MP3files or video's along with a playlist which specifies the order in which the media was played. http://live365.com - blogtalkradio.com - podomatic.com

For real webcasting excitement my fellow home studio producers try presenting a live event. With the proper gear and preparation any live gig or studio performance can be recorded on a digital cam, encoded on the fly and broadcasted to fans via all around the world.

Beat Marketing in review
-=---=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

4 main reasons why most producers don't sell the beats that they make!

1. Do not market themselves as a business!

If you market yourself as a business people will take you more serious! You sell a product and your product should be marketed as a product. You are a producer when you produce beats and you are a business man or woman once you start marketing.

2. Establish clients and not customers!

Producers need to understand that a quick sell does not mean anything. Once you build a relationship with an artist, the amount of cash flow is endless. Why not go the extra mile and create a relationship with every customer.

3. Value your music!

Many producers get desperate for sells and will lower the prices of their beats. Why should you sell a beat for pennys when you can make so much more just by using the correct tools

4. Do not promote their music offline!

A lot of producers I have worked with over the years have know idea how to get clients to buy their beats the easy and most effective way I know is flyers and stickers pass out your product to these rappers out in public go to the rap conventions and talent showcases in your city get the word out by mouth stay in the peoples face and by all means leave a contact number on your flyers and business cards so potential clients can contact you.

The digital age has arrived learn how sell your music independently over the internet, start your record label This video offers every new age option of pushing your music over the net.

Film, TV, and video game placement for your music and video content

Writing songs and music for movies can be a good living however the work for hire clause is the single most biggest rip off in the music industry.

The work for hire clause means that you not only give up any right to further payment, but also that your not the legal author of the work if you sign a contract the company that employs you is officially the writer and you dont exist.

Film and Tv scoring used to be dominated by classically trained composers but these days a decked out midi studio with good music content and a nice trademark can be enough to score a commercial , movie, tv, or video game deal. If you decide to get into film and tv scoreing I suggest you find a attorney first who specializes in this kind of work.
